What is the „Rice Purity Test“? Explanation, Meaning, Definition

The Rice Purity Test is a survey in which participants can test their own level of innocence by answering certain questions. The questions are about worldly matters and the result is based on a percentage scale of 0 to 100, with 100 points representing the highest purity.

The test itself consists of 100 questions originally administered at Rice University. The level of innocence is tested, with questions covering drugs, sexual intercourse, cheating and other activities such as various vices. At the time, new students took this test to be able to connect with other students who had a similar score on the test. Nowadays, the Rice Purity Test is just considered fun.

Among some people, the Rice Purity Test is also known as the Innocence Test. The reason for this is that most of the questions refer to innocence in deeds, thoughts and words. Playfully, the test can be used to find out how innocent you are compared to your friends. This test is also another good way to possibly talk about things that have never come up otherwise.

How does the Rice Purity Test work? Explanation

The test’s total of 100 questions target criminality, sexual experiences, or contact with doge. Questions are asked such as whether one has ever had sex in public, held hands or even engaged in vandalism. The respective answers then result in a score between 0 and 100. The more questions answered with „no“, the greater the innocence – at least in the sense of the test. It is still not entirely clear why the Rice Purity Test was developed in the first place. What is certain, however, is that since the 1920s, various purity tests have been published again and again in American collage newspapers.

The Rice Purity Test as a TikTok trend

On TikTok, many people post their score and show how much their score drops the longer they are in college. Other TikTokers post an estimate of their friends‘ innocence level and then let the reality check figure out the true score. Some users also brag about having either a very high or very low score. For example, one TikToker user wonders how it is that she is only 15 years old and has a score of 5. By the way, 15 is also the average age for people who take this test.

Is the Rice Purity Test dangerous?

Of course, not everyone will be completely comfortable sharing intimate information on the Internet and comparing themselves with others based on this information. Many parents are rightly concerned about this trend. However, an expert in the field of sexual education at the Profamilia counseling center in Mainz gives the all-clear. The test is not dangerous. He is sure that the majority of young people will realize on the basis of the test questions themselves that this test is not really to be taken seriously. It is nothing more than a nice activity for in between, as one knows it from various psycho tests from magazines.

For many adolescents, the world is upside down, and this may be the main reason why so many young people take the test. It is not uncommon for many teenagers to ask themselves questions like „What are others like?“, „What am I like?“. These very questions can be the trigger to take the Rice Purity Test.

What do the individual scores mean?

The result of the test ranges from 0 to 100 points – the higher the score achieved, the more innocent you are.

100 to 98 points (Rice Purity Test)

One is pure as gold. However, very few people achieve this score.

97 to 94 points (Rice Purity Test)

You are pure and may have kissed someone or held hands.

93 to 77 points (Rice Purity Test)

In this score category, one is averagely pure. One has probably made love before.

76 to 45 points (Rice Purity Test)

Purity is tainted and one has had some indecent experiences, problems with the law, and used drugs.

44 to 9 points (Rice Purity Test)

In this score category, purity is very tainted. One has used hard drugs, been intimate in public, and one has been to jail.

8 to 0 points (Rice Purity Test)

One is corrupt from head to toe. If one moves into this score category, one has already done some wild deeds, such as paying – or being paid – for intimacies.

Is it even possible to get a „good“ score on the Rice Purity Test?

There is no such thing as a „good“ or „bad“ score on this test, yet the following can generally be stated: The higher the score, the purer you are. In rare cases, however, a high score can also mean that one is afraid of making mistakes. In some circumstances, this can also mean that one may be a bit too innocent for one’s own good.

Nevertheless, it should always be kept in mind that the test is about the pure fun factor and the result should not be taken seriously. The most important thing is to be able to laugh about the result with friends or family.
