„Putler“ is a portmanteau of the words „Putin“ and „Hitler“. Thus, Russian President Vladimir Putin is compared to the dictator of the German Reich, Adolf Hitler.

The term „Putler“ is used by people who oppose Vladimir Putin’s policy in general and the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine in particular.

In the expression „Putler“ Vladimir Putin’s war of aggression on Ukraine is compared with Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland. But also Vladimir Putin’s political behavior, his trustworthiness and secret intentions are compared with those of Hitler.

However, the term „Putler“ has existed and been used for a long time.

In Russia, the term „Putler“ has been common among opposition figures since the late 2010s. In Ukraine, the word „putler“ is also common.

In 2009, a protester in Russia had to answer to the Russian prosecutor’s office because of a poster. The poster showed Putin with a Hitler beard and raised right arm. The poster read „Putler kaput.“ Russian prosecutors accused the man of extremism.

In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea. This annexation was compared to the annexation of Austria in 1938 by Nazi Germany.

According to Russian linguist Boris Sharifulli, the term „Putler“ was coined in Russia. French historian Marlène Laruelle claims that the term „Putler“ was coined in Ukraine.

Since February 24, 2022, the term „Putler“ has spread in the German-speaking world. Google Germany has received more searches for „Putler“ since that day.

In social media, Vladimir Putin is referred to as „Wladolf Putler“ pder „Adolfmir Putler“. The hashtag #Putler is used.

Criticism of the term „Putler“

But the expression „Putler“ must also be criticized, because it can be a trivialization of the Holocaust. Russian President Vladimir Putin is responsible for the Russian attack on Ukraine, but of a Holocaust Vladimir Putin is not responsible.
