„Clanker“ is a derogatory term for AI and robots. It particularly refers to AI voices and AI chat agents, but also to mobile or moving transport and service robots.
What does the word „Clanker“ mean? Word origin
The term Clanker originates from Star Wars. In that universe, droids are referred to as Clankers.
The expression goes back to the verb to clank, which means to rattle or to clang. In the context of Star Wars, this implies that the droids (being made of metal) rattle or make metallic noises when they move.
What does Clanker mean? Definition, explanation, usage
The term Clanker is used as a derogatory label for AI and robots. Yes, Clanker is even used as an insult.
The expression is a reaction to the increasing presence of robots in everyday life. For example, there are already restaurants where robots serve food, and some customer hotlines are handled by synthetic voices. „Clanker“ serves here as a pejorative term, expressing that someone feels alienated or suspicious about the presence of robots (and AI) in daily life.
The word Clanker serves as a tool of distinction and rejection. It says: We are humans – you are machines. You’re not part of my world. You are alien to me. The core message is: We are not equals! (Even if tech bros claim or wish it were so.)
Whether this already qualifies as robo-racism is for each person to decide.
In a less harsh sense, calling something a Clanker can also be understood as a preference: I’d rather interact with a human than a machine right now. (Because with a human, I can feel a real connection.)
But the core distinction remains: Humans have a soul – Clankers do not. Clankers can simulate humanity, but they will never truly achieve it.
At the same time, humans can lose their humanity.
And Clanker doesn’t only refer to AI and robots – it also sometimes targets the entire tech industry and people who passionately promote AI and robotics.
Since the beginning of July 2025, the term has been spreading worldwide.
Other meanings of Clanker
In the British army, soldiers are mockingly called Clankers if they carry a lot of equipment and rattle when they move.
„Clanker“ is sometimes used to describe a person who seems emotionless or dehumanized – like a machine.
The term Clanker also appears in the Harry Potter universe.
Editor’s comment: The only Clanker we love is Bender!
